Travel by private RUF

Gradually private RUFs will be sold. When a network of RUF-rails has been established, it will become very attractive to buy a RUF and be able to use it in order to avoid congestion and stress on the highway system.

The range of the electric RUF is unlimited within the city because of the rail network. Outside the network, the range can be extended using the hybrid unit when needed.

There is plenty of capacity on the rail system. The users pay for use of the rail system. A typical trip of 9 miles cost $0.6 in energy. If $2 is charged for the trip, a profit of $1.4 is make per trip.

The time spent on the rail can be used to relax or to work on-line via the Internet. It could be considered as working time, so the fare is minor compared to what you earn in the same period of time.

If 90% of the individual RUFs are privately owned and the rail can (with only 0.5 of its capacity used) handle 768,000 RUFs during 3 rush hours, it is realistic to assume that 600,000 private RUFs will use the rail during 3 hours or 200,000 per hour. It is assumed that one day corresponds to 12 hours of peak traffic. Daily travel by private RUF equals 2.4 million trips.

An operating surplus of 1.4 ($/trip) x 345 (days/year) x 2.4 (million RUFs) = $1,159 million is generated per year.
